One shaft across the ceiling, a belt down to every machine. Factories bought electricity and wired it into a layout built for the steam engine it replaced.

Every machine stands where a belt reaches. Not where the work needs it.

A year later, Ford stopped adding electricity and redrew the factory floor

Same building, same people, same electricity everyone else had. He threw out the layout and rebuilt the work around what the technology actually allowed.

100 years later, we are doing the same thing
